A Summer That Matters, No Expensive Program Required
Every May, advertisements for expensive summer programs land in parents’ inboxes with the strong implication that colleges require them. They do not. Admissions and scholarship readers have seen a thousand tuition-funded leadership academies. They are far more interested in what a student does when nobody hands them a schedule.
The summers that read well share one trait. The student made something happen. A job counts, and it counts more than parents think. Scooping ice cream for three months teaches reliability, money handling, and how to be pleasant to strangers at hour seven of a shift. A student who writes honestly about that will beat a student reciting a brochure. A self-directed project counts too. Our co-founder Kelsey spent her high school summers going deep into her field on her own initiative, and that record later helped her win industry scholarships from companies most teenagers have never heard of.
If your student is stuck for ideas, work backward from annoyance. What problem at school, at church, in the neighborhood, or in their hobby genuinely bothers them? Fixing a real irritation produces initiative you cannot fake, and it hands them an essay topic in the bargain.
One caution is worth stating plainly. Resist the urge to manufacture the project yourself. Committees have read plenty of essays about ventures that were obviously a parent’s idea, and the student’s flat prose always gives it away. Your job is the ride to work and the occasional deadline reminder.
